If you are passionate about the idea of connecting with nature and exploring its landscapes through "hikes", you may have heard the terms hiking and trekking. Although many people use them as synonyms, they actually have differences that can influence your outdoor experience.
In this article, we will explain what each one means, their main characteristics, and which is the best option according to your level of experience and goals.
Whether you are looking for a leisurely walk or a more challenging adventure, here you will find key information to choose the ideal activity for you.
What is hiking?
Hiking is a recreational walk that takes place on well-marked trails and generally on accessible terrain. It usually lasts a few hours or a day, making it an ideal activity for beginners or those looking for a relaxed walk to connect with nature.
Characteristics of hiking:
• Short to medium duration walks (from a few hours to a full day).
• Well-marked trails and easy access.
• Does not require specialized equipment.
• Practiced in parks, forests, and natural reserves with defined paths.
What is trekking?
Trekking is a more demanding activity that involves walking on more challenging terrain and for several days. It often requires camping and carrying additional equipment, as the trails can be more remote and less marked.
Characteristics of trekking:
• Long duration walks (from several days to weeks).
• Irregular terrain, with steep slopes and poorly marked trails.
• Need for specialized equipment, such as a large backpack, tent, trekking poles, and more.
• Practiced in mountains, jungles, and remote areas away from "civilization".
The best choice: hiking or trekking?
If you are starting out and looking for a relaxed activity, hiking is the best choice.
You can enjoy nature without worrying about carrying heavy equipment or facing difficult terrain. Additionally, it is an excellent way to improve your physical condition and reduce stress without the need for previous experience.
On the other hand, if you like challenges and want a more immersive experience, trekking is perfect for you. By walking more demanding trails, you will have the opportunity to disconnect from the urban world, facing more demanding physical challenges and exploring remote places that fewer people have seen.
Some basic tips to start hiking or trekking
If you are thinking of taking your first steps in hiking or venturing on a longer journey, here are some recommendations to enjoy the experience safely and pleasantly:
• Start with simple routes: If you have never hiked before, try short walks before venturing on longer routes.
• Equip yourself properly: Wear comfortable and sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing according to the weather, and always remember to bring water and snacks.
• Inform yourself about the route: Check maps and guides before your adventure to know the difficulty and conditions of the path, it will help you to be more comfortable and safe.
• Respect nature: Do not leave trash, carry a bag with you to take your waste, respect the flora and fauna, and always follow the rules of the place.
• Manage your hygiene waste: in the case of hygiene wipes or similar, carry a garbage bag with you and deposit them there. In the case of feces, try to carry a small shovel to dig a hole to deposit the feces and toilet paper. Finish by marking the place by putting some sticks or branches over the covered hole. Both feces and urine should always be at least 50 meters away from any river, lagoon, lake, or other water flow.
